**The scene opens up, and Gunner Hughes is shown walking through the backstage area of the AWR fan expo. He’s dressed in his street clothes which consist of a pair of jeans and a black signature T that has an orange colored “GH” logo on the front. He has a black duffel bag draped over his shoulder, and he’s fumbling around in one of the outside pockets of the duffle bag as he pushes his way through the crowd of workers backstage. He finally pulls out a vibrating cellphone, and he looks at the text message on the screen and hits a button. He smiles and lifts the phone to his ear, and then after a few moments some muffled talking is barely heard on the other end of the call and Gunner responds.**
Gunner: “So what’s the weather like?”
**More muffled talking is barely heard.**
Gunner: “The job?”
**Again the muffled voice is heard.**
Gunner: “Of course….tell them the same fee as always applies. Details?”
**Gunner appears to be taking mental notes as again more muffled talking is heard coming from the cellphone. He listens for a few more moments, then he responds again.**
Gunner: “Fantastic…I love the ocean. Have them wire the first half of the payment to my account. I have a commitment to the AWR this week on Crash TV, one that I’m really looking forward to, but tell them that once that’s over, delivery will be within 48 hours. Out.”
**He hangs up the phone and puts it back in his duffel bag. A smile washes over his face as he imagines that he is about to become much richer within the next week. He then turns a corner in the hallway and a group of reporters wearing various network badges start hurrying at him from the opposite end, all barking out questions at the same time. His smile quickly vanishes as he puts his cellphone back in his duffel bag, and a reporter comes running up to him ahead of the pack, waving at him. As the reporter gets close, Gunner gives the reporter a threatening stare and the man stops in his tracks.**
Reporter: “Whoa there big guy…all I want to do is ask you a few questions.”
Gunner: “Is that right? About what?”
Reporter: “Well first of all, let me start off by complimenting you on a great showing in the Deadly Game tournament. Even though you lost to Slick Doctor in the second round, you completely destroyed Zane Byers in your debut in round one. You won by referee stoppage, and Zane hasn’t been seen since. What provoked such a brutal assault in your debut match?”
**The rest of the reporters fall silent, all with their mics held out, waiting intently for Gunner’s answer.**
Gunner: “What provoked the assault? Isn’t that why we’re in the AWR….to fight? Or are you one of those people who have this silly notion that wrestling is fake?”
**The reporter continues.**
Reporter: “Well there are some skeptics who…”
**Gunner interrupts the man.**
Gunner: “Who what? Who think they know what goes on inside of a wrestling ring? Well you know what, Zane Byers thought he knew what was going to happen inside that wrestling ring too didn’t he? Why don’t you guys go ask him if he thinks wrestling is fake.”
**Gunner laughs, and the reporters go into a frenzy, unhappy with his answer and furious that he would joke about a man being injured. He then speaks up and satisfies them by answering the rest of the man’s question.**
Gunner: ” I’ll admit, the way my match ended against Zane Byers was regrettable. I did want to send a message to the rest of the AWR, but I really didn’t mean to win that match by referee stoppage, I just thought Zane Byers had more in him. I thought that the AWR housed some of the most hardcore fighters on the planet, but Zane Byers apparently didn’t get that memo. So if you want to blame somebody for his unfortunate end in that match, you should blame the AWR. Maybe they should enforce a better screening process for their athletes before they let them compete, because Zane Byers had no business inside a wrestling ring with me.”
**A female reporter pipes in, appearing unhappy with Gunner’s care free attitude during the line of questions.**
Reporter #2: “Well some people are saying that it’s you who has no business being in a wrestling ring. You’re a former security guard who moonlighted as a hired mercenary, linked to everything from strong arm robbery to grand larceny, and even to murder. The AWR is taking a huge risk by letting somebody like you compete inside one of their wrestling ring.”
**Gunner smiles, amused at the reporter’s comment. It’s true, he has done some terrible things in his day, but time has a way of building things into something much bigger than they really are, and he was about to set the record straight.**
Gunner: ”That’s quite a rap sheet you have on me sister, it’s just too bad that it’s not an accurate one.”
Reporter #2: “Really? So you’re saying that you’ve never worked at the Section 8 nightclub in Los Angeles?”
Gunner: ”Sure I did….I worked there for four years.”
Reporter #2: “And on the side you worked as a hired thug, who…”
**Gunner interrupts the woman.**
Gunner:”Allegedly worked as a hired thug. See, you need to get your facts straight and quit basing your reports on rumors. It’s never been proven that I’ve participated in anything illegal, especially murder. I’m no thug, and I’m certainly no killer. Yes, there have been stories about me allegedly working for some shady characters and performing tasks that some may call….unethical. But I can assure you that anything I’ve ever done has been with within the limits of the law and done with the best of intentions, and none of those things involve murdering somebody. I’m no hit man, and I am not a man who is arrogant enough to think he has the right to take away a life. The good lord gives us life, and on any given day he is the only force that has the right to take it away. But what I will do…...is make you beg for that day to come if you wind up as one of the unfortunate names on my list.”
Reporter #2: “And what list is that?”
**Gunner points to his head.**
Gunner: ”The list that I store right up here. It’s the names of the people who stand in the way of me getting what. This week there’s only one name on this list. This man doesn’t have to worry about any strong armed robberies or grand larcenies, and certainly he won’t need to worry about losing his life. But what he will need to worry about is what will happen to him when that bell rings on Crash TV and he is left standing across the ring from Gunner Hughes. So go ahead and print that in your newspaper lady!”
Reporter #2: “But I work for ESPN…”
Gunner: ”Whatever.”
**Another reporter, a young man, then blurts out his question.**
Reporter #3: “Are you referring to Jay Combs?”
**Gunner laughs, deciding to poke fun at the rookie reporter.**
Gunner: ”Well who in the hell do you think I’m talking about junior? You saw the card right? Do I have another match that nobody told me about? Is this your first day on the job? Do you need me to go out and get you an AWR coloring book and color you a picture of what’s gonna go down this week?”
**The reporter’s face turns red with embarrassment, and he slinks back into the crowd as the next one steps up, another young man.**
Reporter #4: “There have been rumors that you have had prior fighting experiences in some form. Some say underground fighting, some say luchador wrestling in Mexico. Can you give us some clarification?”
**Gunner laughs again, amused by the sounds of yet another rumor about him.**
Gunner: ”Come on man….do I look like a luchador wrestler to you? Sure, I spent some time in Mexico, and you can’t help but to see some of it in when you spent any amount of time in Mexico, but as you can tell by the two matches I’ve had in the AWR….luchador is definitely not my style.”
Reporter #4: “Well then what is?”
Gunner: ”I don’t really know. I just beat people up….I never really considered it a style. I kind of dabbled in a little of everything in my day, boxing in Philly, Sambo in Abu Dhabi, kickboxing in Holland….I was never really great at any of them, but held my own in all of them. Wrestling from my high school days has always been my go to move that I fall back on anytime I was outmatched while working security, I have always been good at tossing people around.”
**Another male reporter butts in, his mic held out to Gunner’s face.**
Reporter #5: “So do you think that type of fighting style will allow you to excel in the AWR? I mean, you had a great showing in the first round of the tournament, but you fell short against Slick. And now you’re up against a former three time world champion in Jay Combs. Don’t you think you should make some adjustments before going into this match with an opponent of that calibre?”
**Gunner frowns, not liking his skills being questioned by this shrimp of a man. He wants to reach out and just pop his head like a pimple, but he refrains from so, knowing that his outlet is now inside a AWR wrestling ring. He calms himself down and smiles at the man as he responds. **
Gunner: ”You’re right, Jay Combs is a three time world champion. Three times he’s proven that he is the best in his respective company. But you see, as many title belts as he has worn around his waist, he has never been inside the ring with a man like me. Those past title reigns he holds might garner him some respect from the rest of the wrestling world, but it takes more than just a fancy resume to impress me. I’m not saying the man doesn’t have talent, I don’t even know him, but I just have always been a person who needs to see it to believe it. So this week on Crash TV, Jay Combs has the perfect opportunity to make a believer out of me.”
**The reporter, satisfied with Gunner’s response, disappears into the crowd and the next reporter steps up, an attractive looking woman wearing a low cut shirt and tight pants. Gunner smiles at her before she even asks her question.**
Reporter #6: “Gunner, not to skip past Jay Combs….but what are your future plans in the AWR. Do you have your sights set on Anthony Royal and the world title belt?”
Gunner: ”Everybody has their sights set on Anthony Royal and the world title belt. He’s the man who’s walking around with the prize that everybody wants. Why do you think you haven’t seen him in public? But what I want in the AWR is much more than just the World Heavyweight Championship. What I want is for every superstar on this roster to have Gunner Hughes on their minds at all times. I want them to worry about me when they go to sleep at night. I want my name to be the first thing that pops into their heads in the morning when their eating their oatmeal. You see, I came to the AWR to do much more than just become a champion….I came to dominate. You witnessed what I did to Zane Byers, and despite the fact that I failed to get the job done against Slick Doctor, I will do the same thing to Jay Combs this week! You guys want to know about strategies and fighting styles? Well I’ll tell you this….I’m done with wrestling in the AWR!”
**The reporters start to chatter, surprised and confused by Gunner’s statement. Gunner continues.**
Gunner: ”Jay Combs is probably sitting at home right now thinking that he has the advantage over me in our match because he’s a former three time world champion and has more wrestling experience inside the ring than I do. I’m sure he considers himself among the best wrestlers in the AWR right now. But myself, as a fresh face to the wrestling world I can’t quite make that same claim. I still have much to prove to the rest of the AWR before I can make that statement. But although I don’t believe I’m the best wrestler in the AWR just yet, I do believe that I’m the best fighter. So this week on Crash TV, I’m not showing up to wrestle Jay Combs……I’m showing up to fight him!”
Reporter #6: “Well Jay Combs is no stranger to a fight, as he’s proven in many different companies that he can scrap with the best of them.”
**Gunner shakes his head.**
Gunner: ”Best of who? I saw some tape on Combs, and I got a good look at some of the companies that he’s worked for in the past. To walk around and claim to be the best in any of those low budget companies is about as impressive as being the smartest kid in special ed class. Beating up on nobodies in some other second rate promotion is one thing, but now Combs is in the AWR and he’s up against a man who is going to bring the fight to him. I will be the aggressor in this match, and I will put more pressure on him than he’s ever experienced in any of those farm leagues he’s wrestled in.”
**Another reporter steps up, asking his question next.**
Reporter #7: “Both you and Jay Combs laid out open challenges to anybody on the entire AWR roster this week, and nobody accepted either of your challenges, resulting in this matchup pitting you two against each other. What do you think that says about the rest of the AWR roster?”
**Gunner laughs at the question, thinking the answer to it as being pretty obvious.**
Gunner: ”Do I really need to point out what that says about the rest of the roster? They wanted no part of either me or Jay Combs, so both of our challenges fell on deaf ears. But the thing is, you can only avoid a fight for so long. They might not have lined up to fight me this week, but whether they want to accept it or not, each and every one of them will eventually have to face the music and step inside the ring with me. If they were smart, they would take that opportunity right now while I’m still green in the world of professional wrestling. Every time I climb inside that ring, I’m only going to climb out of it a better fighter. So the longer these fools wait to step up and test me, the worse the result they’re going to get when it happens.”
**Gunner suddenly glances down at his duffel bag and reaches inside the pocket to pull out his cellphone again. He looks at the text message on the screen and hits a button before looking back up to the reporters. **
Gunner: ”As far as Jay’s challenge….well, maybe the rest of the roster was just intimidated by his resume. But me, I look at it as an opportunity to prove on Crash TV that my loss to Slick last week was nothing but a minor flaw. Jay Combs might be a decorated former champion looking to propel himself up the AWR ranks, but unfortunately for him he just got tossed into the wrong warm-up match. A win over him not only raises my own stock, but it will send a message to the rest of the peons on the AWR roster that they can run from my challenges for now, but they cannot hide forever. Sooner or later their names will all end up on my list.”
**The reporters go into another frenzy, all trying to get in another question as Gunner raises a hand.**
Gunner: “I’m sorry kids, but that’s all the time I have right now….no more questions.”
**Gunner pushes his way past the group of reporters and begins to head down the hallway again. He waits until he turns another corner, then he looks at the text message on his phone again. He smiles and mutters to himself.**
Gunner: “Keep em’ coming.”
**He looks around, then he hits a button on the phone and lifts it to his ear. After a few moments some muffled talking is barely heard on the other end of the call and Gunner responds.**
